Standard for the Installation of Lightning Protection Systems (NFPA 780- 2023) is designed to provide guidelines in designing and installing a lightning protection system for intercepting a lightning strike and safely con- ducting the current to ground.
A basic lightning protection system consists of air terminals at all locations where lightning may directly strike a structure. Included in this system are properly designed electrical conductors connecting all air terminals and extending to ground with terminations at ground for distribution of the lightning discharge. Interconnection of grounded and ungrounded metal objects where a side-flash may occur shall be bonded to this lightning network.
