The design of structural steel members has developed over the past century from a simple approach involving a few basic properties of steel and elementary mathematics to a more sophisticated treatment demanding a thorough knowledge of structural and material behavior. Steel Structures: Design and Behavior, 5/e strives to present in a logical manner the theoretical background needed for developing and explaining design requirements. Beginning with coverage of background material, including references to pertinent research, the development of specific formulas used in the AISC Specifications is followed by a generous number of design examples explaining in detail the process of selecting minimum weight members to satisfy given conditions.

Appropriate for civil engineering courses in structural steel design, the fourth edition of this classic text provides background for designing steel structural elements using the 1993 AISC Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) and the 1989 AISC Allowable Stress Design (ASD) Specifications. As in previous successful editions, a logical sequence of topics is featured, making complex material easy to understand. Emphasis throughout is placed on the explanation of the LRFD approach involving "limit states" and factored loads. To provide secondary coverage for the major topics--such as tension members, axially loaded columns, beams, beam-columns, and composite construction--the ASD formulations are developed from the strength-related concepts of LRFD. Throughout the book, all concepts are illustrated by numerical examples using LRFD; for the most important concepts, examples using ASD are also included. Many new end-of-chapter problems and references round out the text's presentation.
